Grainau is a municipality in Bavaria, Germany, located at the base of the Zugspitze, Germany's tallest mountain, in the Wetterstein Alps, a sub-range of the Alps. It is part of the former County of Werdenfels, along with six other municipalities. Grainau is known for its natural beauty, including two mountain lakes, the Badersee and Eibsee, the latter being surrounded by forests. To the south is the Waxenstein mountain, while the Kramerspitz and Ammergau Alps lie to the north. The district consists of Obergrainau, Untergrainau, Hammersbach, Schmölz, and Eibsee.
