Ehrwald is an Austrian village in Tyrol, located at the foot of the Wetterstein Mountains and near the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak (2962 meters). The village lies in the former marshland of the Lermooser Moos and has historical roots dating back to 1274. Ehrwald became a popular tourist destination, offering both summer and winter activities, partly thanks to the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn, a cable car built in 1926. It is part of the Zugspitz Arena and features two ski areas: Ehrwalder Alm (26 km of slopes, 1100-1900 m elevation) and Wettersteinbahn (22 km of slopes, 1010-1520 m elevation). Ehrwald includes several hamlets, such as Obermoos and Ehrwald-Schanz, and borders municipalities like Lermoos and Biberwier. The region is famous for its midsummer fire tradition, a UNESCO cultural heritage event where thousands of torches are arranged into figures on the mountainsides. Attractions include the Ehrwalder Becken nature reserve. Ehrwald is accessible via the Fern Pass, the Außerfern railway line, and nearby main roads.
